Santiago Ramon Y Cajal was born in 1852 in Navarre, Spain. He planned on being an artist and had a reputation as a trouble maker. Not the being you’d expect for a Nobel Prize winner.
His father, an anatomy teacher, and a doctor felt he was meant for bigger things. In an attempt to steer Cajal in another career trajectory, he would take his son to cemeteries in search of bones to draw. Eventually, Cajal was inspired and enrolled in medical school at the University of Zaragoza. He went on to study and Barcelona University and at the University of Madrid. At school, Cajal developed an interest in histology; the study of microscopic structures of tissue.
